1 of a Kind Stanley Numbered # 150 150th Anniversary Plane Rare From John Walter

Description: Thank you for viewing this item.I'm probably going to regret letting this plane go, as it's always been one of my most favorites in my collection, but it's time to pass this to another collector that will appreciate the plane. This listing is for a one of a kind plane I obtained directly from John Walter (author of the Antique and Collectible Stanley Tools Guide to Identify and Value book) years ago. The plane has a super unique story to it. In short, Stanley to celebrate their 150th anniversary sold tools branded with the 150 year logo and boxes in 1993. As part of that promotion, they sold a limited number of old, restored transitional planes (#d to 2000). To restore the planes, Stanley solicited builds (often from some larger collectors and other people in the hobby that might have access to a significant number of old transitional planes) requesting quotes on what it would cost to purchase and restore the planes (quite the undertaking, as it had to have been pretty difficult to locate a couple thousand transitional plans in restorable condition). Anyway, John submitted bids to Stanley (see paperwork) along with a restored plane example to show what the restored planes he could produce would look like quality-wise. I was told that Stanley liked his example but wanted a reduced cost in order to keep overall costs down. Through some negotiation at that time, John found he could not source good quality transitionals that were restorable and couldn't go down on the cost. In short, Stanley opted to go with a different restorer (or groups of restorers) to fill the orders. If you've seen some of the other 150 year planes, the restoration quality greatly varied, with some being ok and others almost just being varnished (I remember one I saw that had a patch around the throat and not far from falling apart). Anyway, as a thanks for the bid and help John provided in helping to source planes for the cause, Stanley gifted him back the actual plane he restored (they said it was the nicest example they had) AND, in a tribute, they numbered it to be "#150 / 2000", (which is really a nice tribute given the planes were restored for the 150th anniversary).Included are all of the items shown. The restored plane with the certification plate of the plane numbered 150 / 2000. Several pieces of paperwork from John he submitted directly to Stanley and his notes that outline the bid and the cost submitted to Stanley for the restore. The original plane box is included (which is in really nice shape - a few minor dings from storage but it's super nice and I've done everything I can to store it well. Again - likely will miss owning this plane, but it's time to share it with other collectors.
