Clayton W. Holmes, one of Elmira's leading corporation officials, was born at LeRaysville, Bradford County, PA. September 26. 1848. He was a son of Dr. Daniel Holmes, who was born at Oxford, NY, physician and surgeon, being brigade surgeon of General Doubleday's brigade with the rank of major during the civil war. Lois Wood Holmes, mother of Clayton W., was born at East Smithfield, Bradford county, PA, and has been a resident of Elmira since 1866. The paternal ancestors descended from George Holmes, who settled in Roxbury, MA, coming from England in 1594. Maternal ancestors from William Wood, of Concord, MA, family from Derbyshire, England, in 1645.Clayton W. Holmes received his preparatory course at Homer academy, Homer, NY, later attending Lafayette college at Easton, PA, class of I860. Received degree of A. M. in 1874. One year, 1869-1870, he studied in medical department of the University of Pennsylvania. In August 1871, he went into the drug business at Wilkes-Barre, PA; sold out January 1, 1877, and entered same business in Elmira. In 1878, went into the wholesale drug business on Lake street, in Elmira, was burned out in May, 1884.Afterwards began manufacturing a toilet specialty "Frostilla," which he continued as his main business, devoting most of his time to its manufacture.Mr. Holmes established the Hygeia Refrigerating company in 1890, of which company he was president, owning three-quarters of the stock. He was also president of the following corporations: Chemung Valley Mutual Loan association of Elmira, a million and a half company; Minnequa Furniture company, Canton, PA; Elmira water board (municipal ownership water plant): Turner Electric company, Elmira; first vice-president First National bank, Canton, PA; member of Elmira board of education, was a member of common council of Elmira, 1886-1888; member of the city water board from its inception until his death and its first president. In 1SS9 Mr. Holmes entered the field of journalism as general manager of the Elmira Daily Advertiser. In 1890 he became its owner until 1905, when he sold out and retired from newspaper work. He was the author and publisher of several books, among them being "Memorial History of Theta Delta Chi Fraternity, in 1898; "Genealogy of William Wood, of Concord Mass., in 1890;" "Genealogy of John Steevens, of Guilford, Conn., in 1905;" "History of Elmira Prison Camp, 1912." Mr. Holmes was secretary of New York State Pharmaceutical association from 1879 to 1896. He was the originator of the modern school savings plan, as now applied to the public schools, and author of the law under which they operate in New York state. He had been a director in the Chemung Valley Mutual Loan association about forty years. He was a life member of Ivy lodge, No. 397, of St. Omer's Commandery. No. 19, Corning Consistory, and member of Scottish rite thirty-second degree Masons; life member of American Pharmaceutical association, also New York State League Savings and Loan association; member of New York Genealogical society, New York Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, Sons of American Revolution, Sons of Veterans, Century club and Country club, of Elmira, NY; Elmira Automobile club, Automobile club of America, of New York city. Mr. Holmes was married November 2, 1871, to Charlotte Steevens [d. 21 Feb 1933], of Elmira, and they had one daughter, Flora Lois, who married Floyd M. Shoemaker, of Elmira, June 6, 1895. . .He was interred at Woodlawn Cemetery.CONDITION: Clean pages. Covers and front map are detached but included.
