Description: Three volume set of the Works of Cornelius Tacitus, Roman historian, as interpreted by Johann August Ernesti. In very good condition, there is foxing throughout all three volumes. Nice leather bindings with some cracking to the spine and the occasional split gutter inside as a result. The first two volumes have the name “Maria Swift” inside on title page. The first volume has, below the name, three lines in what appears to be the same hand, but illegible. The second volume has “Maria Swift/Dover Academy”. The third volume has no name or writing. Volume two has faint pencil marks inside the front (Mrs. Belinda Swift); several spare appear to have been removed and there is a small tear at the bottom corners of the spare. Very Good Condition: 8vo: 3 Volumes: full leather with red label and black label on spine, red having title and black having Volume number in gilt lettering: corners are scuffed and bent with some board exposed: spines have several cracks in each running length of spine: vol. 1 has softening to head and tail with beginning of crack at tail up on front; volume 2 has a little softening to the head with a small lengthwise piece to the black label down the center: vol. 3 missing head: foxing throughout all three volumes with the occasional tide mark: spine cracked in volume three: fold out in volume of family tree of “Stemma Augustus Domus” and volume three has foldout right about half way through the volume of Caesar’ family tree with gutter crack: name inside volumes one and two: “C.Cornelii Taciti Opera ex Recensione Io.
