Description: Note: Please study the images carefully to determine the condition of this vintage photograph, as it may not be in perfect condition. It may contain wrinkles, cracks, and possibly even tears due to its age and how it was handled before it got to us. A scanner may interpret colors and contrast differently than human eyes will, so it is possible that the actual photograph may be slightly darker or lighter in person. Taylor This is an original press photo. Celebrating the end of the Civil War in 1865, Union army troops paraded along Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. Only blocks away from the elegant thoroughfare was Hooker's Division, an infamous neighborhood named after the troops of General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker. They patronized the brothels that helped give the area its bad name. Archaeologists are excavating part of the neighborhood, now a parking lot, soon to be covered by a modern building. Painting by James E. Taylor courtesy National Archives. (Brady Collection)Photo measures 10.25 x 8inches. Photo is dated --1865.
