Description: FOR SALE:1871 James Longacre Indian Princess Classic Silver Dollar Series 3-pc Set AN EXCELLENT ADDITION TO ANY COLLECTION ames Longacre Indian Princess SetOther than a trade dollar struck for foreign markets, the United States Mint didn’t issue a silver dollar for much of the 1870s until the Morgan Silver Dollar made its debut in 1878. But that didn’t mean the Mint wasn’t busy. In fact, a variety of pattern coins were produced to test new designs, compositions and even denominations. They also served as special gifts for favored collectors and visiting dignitaries. One of the more handsome pattern designs of this era was the “Indian Princess” dollar designed by James Longacre, the U.S. Mint’s fourth Chief Engraver from 1844 until his death in 1869.A Favorite Among Pattern CollectorsThe design, which showed a seated representation of Liberty wearing an Indian headdress, is a favorite among pattern collectors and was struck in a number of metals. It was implemented in 1871 by Longacre’s successor, Sixth U.S. Mint Chief Engraver William Barber and was similar to Longacre’s Seated Liberty design that was introduced in the 1830s. In addition to a seated Liberty wearing an Indian headdress, she’s depicted supporting a liberty pole with her right hand while her left hand rests on a globe with a ribbon inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The reverse made use of the adopted dies for the Seated dollar. The original patterns were also struck in a high relief, providing more of a medallic appearance than otherwise seen on most pattern coins.Three-Piece Set Features Medals Struck In Nickel-Silver, Copper And Gold AlloyThis three-piece set of medals features the stunning vintage design of that 1871 classic created using today’s advanced minting techniques.
