Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Silver charm struck as a souvenir for the 1876 U. S. Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. 18mm, presumed in 90% coin Silver as is typical (not specifically tested), with original ring mounted after striking. Extremely Fine or better, some remaining luster and interesting, original toning. The Obverse die shows the Liberty Bell, the Reverse Independence Hall. Dies by William H. Key, signed at bottom of Independence Hall. The designs similar to, suitably reduced, Key's various dies used to strike multiple medals for the event with these same two subjects. Almost certainly actually struck by George B. Soley, possibly as one of his series of souvenirs, most famously the various 13mm "Lord's Prayer" varieties, having had Key engrave the dies. Likely is that it was struck on the Expo grounds on the old Mint steam press Soley acquired. A number of similarly sized tokens/charms are known from this event, although this particular one seems to be more difficult to find based on my quick research. Discussion with a specialist suggests that this may also have been struck at the U. S. Mint in Philadelphia, where Key and Soley were both employed. The relationship between Key, Soley, the Mint, private engraving contracts and the Expo is a tangled skein, and worthy of further study. Much relevant general info can be found in Jeff Shevlin's new publication on So Called Dollars of the U. S. Expositions, although not specifically on this piece.
