Description: I have for sale a commemorative medal struck for the 1876 United States Centennial Exposition that was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The medal is gilted bronze, it is 2 1/4 inch in diameter and in circulated condition with field marks and rim dings. The medal was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and the engraver was William Barber. This medal is listed in the Medals Of The U.S. Mint by Julian as CM-11. The obverse shows Liberty, with sword in right hand and left hand toward thirteen stars in a glory, rising from the ground. At the rim it reads THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE, AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES and in the center it has the year 1776. On the reverse at the rim it reads BY AUTHORITY OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, and inside a wreath it reads IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE and at the bottom rim the year 1876.
