Description: I have for sale the official medal for the 1876 United States Centennial Exposition that was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The medal is copper, it is 1 1/2 inch in diameter and in a high grade circulated condition with most of the gilt still remaining. The medal was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and the engraver was William Barber. This medal is listed in the So Called Dollar book as HK22. The obverse shows Liberty, with sword in right hand and left hand toward thirteen stars in a glory, rising from the ground. At the rim it reads THESE UNITED COLONIES ARE, AND OF RIGHT OUGHT TO BE, FREE AND INDEPENDENT STATES and in the center it has the year 1776. On the reverse at the rim it reads BY AUTHORITY OF THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES, and inside a wreath it reads IN COMMEMORATION OF THE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE and at the bottom rim the year 1876.
