Description: Up for sale is one of the most coveted Star Notes of the 1899 $1 Black Eagles, the Fr 229* with Vernon-McClung signatures. When Congress and the Treasury first authorized Star Notes to be printed to replace defective notes in 1910, the very first batch of Star Notes printed were Vernon-McClung Black Eagles. This note for sale, with low serial *98097B was one of the earliest Star Notes ever printed. This signature very rarely comes up at all and this note has the nice low serial. This gorgeous Star Note grades Very Fine in my opinion. Still has nice body to the paper and strong color. Has some light stains on the reverse, typical of a midgrade circulated note. Please check scans and judge grade and condition for yourself. The PMG population report lists only 17 known graded examples, and the Murray Star Note book lists a total of 26 known total. The Murray book, the definitive authority on large size Star Notes, lists this rare signature at $1,700 in VF. Don't miss this chance to pick up an exceptionally tough note, this is the only Fr 229* I have ever had. Sent with signature confirmation. Thanks for looking and have a great day!
