She became famous for having initiated the first cosmetic company in the United States and for fighting to maintain her business against male predators. She set the stage for later female cosmetic moguls. A Little More History:Harriet Hubbard Ayer (June 27, 1849, Chicago, Illinois – November 25, 1903, New York City) was an American cosmetics entrepreneur and journalist during the second half of the nineteenth century from the 1920s. Harriet Hubbard Ayers was a well known name at the time that it was sold. By 1925, the Federal Trade Commission listed Harriet Hubbard Ayer as the third largest manufacturer of cosmetics in the United States. It not only sold Theatrical Face Powder, but it also sold: Eau de Beaute, Massage Cream, Coeur de Violette Cerate, Wrinkle Eradicator, Skin Whitener, Face Powder, Service Talcum, Complexion Balm, Face Bleach, Lemon Lotion, and many moire beauty products. All of its cosmetic products were sold in drugstores and department stores. It had offices in Paris and London as well as an exclusive beauty salon that provided various beauty services in Paris. By the 1920s everyone was fascinated by the cinema and the silent movies and movie stars ... cosmetic companies wanted to cash in on being associated with the cinema industry ... as a result, many cosmetic companies started using words such a "Theatrical Powder" to advertise their products.
