Taiwan-Industries. The Changhua By-product Factory of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation--designed to manufacture both soft insulating board and compressed hard boards--is the largest mill in the Orient using bagasse as raw material. Opened in January, 1957, the mill can process 150,000 square feet of soft and hard boards every 24 hours. Bagasse, left over from sugarcane after pressing, was formerly considered waste and used only for fuel. In Taiwan, however, it has also served as a raw material in the manufacture of pulp and paper. Bagasse boards are used largely for construction purposes. Besides meeting local requirements, the boards also have a good market in Southeast Asia. Refined, chemically-treated bagasse, after passing through board-forming machine and wet roller press, goes through this giant dryer. The dried boards are then cooled, rolled, cut and trimmed.
