Description: 1962 Dutch "TV" Set - Wilma Rudolph #12 - PSA 6. Wonderful card... Right up there with Jesse Owens in terms of the magnitude of athletic and life accomplishments. Ms. Rudolph's story is inspirational. She was born prematurely on June 23, 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was the twentieth of 22 siblings from her father's two marriages. Rudolph suffered from several early childhood illnesses, and she contracted infantile paralysis at the age of five. She lost strength in her left leg and foot. Physically disabled for much of her early life, Rudolph wore a leg brace until she was twelve years old. Rudolph's parents sought treatment for her at Meharry Medical College. Now imagine, just for a moment, what it must take to go from being a disabled child, with difficulties walking, to an Olympic medalist- and I'm not talking about earning medals in badminton or table tennis (no disrespect to those competitors). Ms. Rudolph earned 3 gold medals in Rome at the 1960 Olympics. How cool would it have been to spend the morning touring the Roman Colosseum and Trevi Fountain, and then going to watch Ms. Rudolph win gold medals in the 100 and 200 meter sprints? In 1956, at the age of just 16, she competed in the Olympics in Australia. 16 YEARS OLD!!! Truly remarkable story of human courage. Sadly she passed away in 1994 from Cancer. Rest in peace Ms. Rudolph... Makes an excellent and reasonably priced gift for anyone with an interest in the subject of the card.
