Description: When the U.S. space program made it to the moon in 1969, the whole world -- and the U.S. in particular -- basically flipped out. The lunar landing was an achievement that would have -- did -- seem like absolute science fiction just ten years before. As you can imagine, merchandise of all kinds was produced to commemorate the event. One fairly common item that consumers might receive was this medallion, featuring an image of Neil Armstrong on the obverse and the advertising logo and/or message of a store, company, or organization on the reverse. Notably, these advertising elements were not etched into the coin -- businesses could not purchase blanks and then put their logo on them on their own; rather, they had to submit their design to the company that produced the coins and have them cast especially for that business, making these much more expensive to produce, and as a result, rarer than other similar souvenirs. This particular item was given out by the Linn Co-Op Oil Company of Marion, Iowa. The Linn Co-Op is still in business.
