Issued by Japanese Telephone Company (Nippon Telegraph and Telegraph- NTT), they produced their own designs, but also allowed custom designs (for various businesses, commemorations, etc.). First cards were issued in 1982, and while their use is in decline, there is still a number of public pay phones in Japan that accept them, and new designs are still made. Phone cards started the golden age of pre-paid cards in Japan, which is still mainly a cash society. Telephone cards, and related Fumi (Postal) cards, a myriad of transportation cards, most famous at the time was Orange card, as well as various businesses and attractions, were a great way for people not to carry excess cash, or coins with them. Because they are colorful, often bearing great designs, and were made in limited numbers they quickly became collector items. Cards are magnetic, and additionally one or more holes was punched by a machine to denote remaining balance, or when card is fully used. Please email me for more photos. Free shipping.
