It can be cut low as a hedge bush (as depicted in the last photo) or cut columnar (3rd photo) or be left alone to spread further out such as depicted in the main photo. Eastern Red Cedar purifies the air and makes for a wonderful natural privacy fence or hedgerow. This American native evergreen boasts showy blue berries in the fall/winter months and can grow anywhere from 30 ft up to 65 ft tall if not trimmed. How to Care for Eastern Red CedarRemove any branches that grow on the ground or any that grow beside the main trunk. Trim during winter or spring months. Take care not to trim more than 1/4 of the tree in one season. Fertilize in early spring and late summer with general 10-10-10 all purpose fertilizer. Do not over water. Cedar trees in general do not like boggy soil. Germination Procedure: Drop seeds in hot water and let them soak for 24 hrs. Next cold stratify seeds in the freezer for 3-4 months before sowing. Sow seeds at a quarter-inch depth when temperatures are warm.
