Description: Andrew Wyeth - 'Helga In Orchard' Color Offset Lithograph. This Wyeth was purchased from Heisman Fine Arts Gallery in Ardmore, PA approximately 1993. The print itself is 34 1/2" x 24", and is surrounded by a 2" double matte. The frame dimensions are 36 1/2 x 27". The print itself is in excellent condition. One of the best-known American artists of the mid-late 20th century, Andrew Wyeth was primarily a realist painter. Wyeth's favorite subjects were the people and land around his hometown of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and in Cushing, Maine; where he spent his Summers. The 'Helga Series', was produced in secrecy between 1971 and 1985. The subject is Helga Testorf, Wyeth's Chadds Ford neighbor. The collection consists of some 240 drawings, watercolors and temperas. Depicting one person over a nearly 15 year period, the series is an emotionally involved observation of Helga in a a number of poses and moods. Philadelphia publisher Leonard E.B. Andrews purchased the entire collection in 1986. It was exhibited in 1987 at the National Gallery of Art, as well as in a nationwide tour. At the tour's completion, Andrews sold the collection to a Japanese company. Subsequent to that time, Much of this series is out of print, and prints from the collection have been relatively uncommon to find. This particular print, 'In The Orchard', dates from the late 1980's and is particularly difficult to come by. The appraiser speculated that given the choice of other images of Helga in the series, 'Helga In Orchard' might simply have been less popular, given that Wyeth painted a blemish in the upper right. One could only speculate why.
