Description: African Tribal Decorative Bronze Head Sculpture This bronze bust is from Benin (Today Nigeria). It is of a tribal queen (Chief's #1 Wife), Queen Emotan. These busts were cast by the Benin to honor the Kings and Queens. The busts were of actual people. The early Benin pieces (12th century to the 19th century) are both figurative and abstract. As the castings evolved, they became more realistic. The Benin castings from the first half of the 20th century were cast in the 1950s. The great museums of the world have the early Benin pieces, and auction houses, such as Southebys, have auctioned such cultures for 100s of thousands of dollars. This bust is in excellent condition.
