Description: Antique 5.5" pottery Toby Jug, believed to be manufactured by Allerton & Sons in the late 1800s. This piece is in wonderful condition with no chips or cracks and only very light crazing. Ever wonder why they are called Toby Jugs (with spouts) or Toby Mugs (no spouts)? I did! Possible origins of the name include the character Sir Toby Belch from Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' or perhaps a Yorkshireman who recieved the name Toby 'Fillpot' after drinking 2,000 pints ale.
