Antique Quilt 1900 Signed Dated Handmade Cotton PA Rare Kings Crown of Thorns

Description: Beautiful antique Pennsylvania pieced quilt in a rare pattern. All hand pieced, hand sewn and hand quilted. The blocks in this quilt are variations of Kings Crown or Crown of Thorns. I also found a similar block reference in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns for a pattern called "An Effective Square" which was published in the Ladies Home Journal in 1899. I found that interesting given this quilt is quite festive looking and dated the following year, 1900 (as pictured). It also has two sets of initials embroidered into the fancy 3 fabric-dog-tooth border. So much complexity to this pattern and very skillfully done. Constructed of all cotton fabrics, the cinnamon pink calico, and yellow calico are classic colors used in quilts from Southeastern Pennsylvania. The white fabric has a tiny blue dot print only noticed on close inspection of the fabrics. Backing fabric is a slightly coarser weave white cotton with a tiny brown print. This came out of Lancaster County PA and is assumed to be from the Mennonite Community. Condition is very good to excellent for it's age. It does have an area of slight soft fade on the lower left that can be seen in the overall picture. There are a few faint scattered spots I tried to show. Overall light surface wear to the fabrics and binding none worn through, a few scattered bites to the binding but no large splits. There are no holes or tears, fabric is sturdy. Thin all cotton batting. Has been washed previously but I have not washed it since owning as the few and faint scattered marks are minor. Could certainly be handwashed with care and appropriate products if you wished to do so. Hand quilted with tiny even stitches, this was done by experienced quilters who were excellent seamstresses. This one is a real treasure for the collector in a rare, unique pattern seldom found. Measures approx 86 x 84 inches. Densely quilted throughout with mostly 1/4" and 1/2" spacing between rows and approx 7 spi. Authenticity and satisfaction guaranteed. Please see the details of the 14 day return policy offered.
