Description: BEST IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS VOLUME 22 The Best in Children's Books series was published from 1957 through to the late 1960s. The entire series consists of 42 volumes. Each book was published with a dust jacket, but they are more commonly found without them. The dust jackets feature images drawn from the art within. Similarly, the decorated board covers also have images from the book - but different ones from those found on the dust jacket. The volumes are not numbered on either the dust jacket or the board bindings. (Lists can be found online.) Contents are a mix of fairy tales, poetry, fiction and non-fiction pieces. The non-fiction may be illustrated with art or photographs. Each volume also contains an informational piece about a country, accompanied by color photos and an illustrated map. One of the most appealing aspects of the series is seeing the early work of certain artists who went on to become famous in their own right. (When the books came out, for the most part, these were freelance jobs.) Some notable examples: Richard Scarry, Maurice Sendak, Ezra Jack Keats, Adrienne Adams, Paul Galdone, Peter Spier and Leonard Weisgard. Occasionally, the book would reprint excerpts from stories and illustrations that had already become established as "classics". Samples of this include: Alice in Wonderland, Little House in the Big Woods and Charlotte's Web. I have taken the time to list some of those contributors who are noteworthy. Also, I make note of the non-fiction photo essay (if relevant) as well as which country is featured in this particular volume.
