Graduated from the Ordzhonikidze Moscow Aviation Institute (1958–1963). Initially receiving a technical education, from 1967 to 1980 he worked at an aviation industry enterprise (Nauka plant). He was an apprentice of a draftsman, a technician, a senior technician, a foreman, a deputy head of a mechanical assembly shop, a design engineer.
