Description: Thinned oil or possibly water-based casein/tempera on small board painting, 7 1/4" by 5 1/4" framed, signed at lower right by noted American artist Carol Jablonsky (1939-1992). The image is of a young female child, I believe of Native American or Mexican heritage. Jablonsky died at a young age but left behind a large body of work, including prints and original paintings. A collector on askart provided biographical information she had gleaned: "Jablonsky was born in Port Washington, New York in 1939, she studied art at Boston University; Art Students League, New York and Institute Allende, Mexico. Her works were exhibited through out the U.S. and Mexico, including the El Paso Museum of Art, Galleria San Miguel de Allende, Mexico and National Society of Painters in Casein, New York. Her mediums were etchings, watercolors, casein tempera paintings, lithographs and drypoints and were typified by delicate colors and imaginative characterizations. She devoted many hours of painstaking research to each image, drawing upon a wide variety of sources, including medieval book illuminations and sculpture, Roman frescoes, the Bible, astrology, Oriental philosophies and American and English literature. The resulting imagery had intense symbolism that belied its simplicity. Her works encompassed a variety of subjects, including the mythological character Pegasus, creatures from a medieval bestiary, and the story of Moses. Between 1975 and 1979, Jablonsky devoted herself to a project based on the theme of the Garden of Eden." Jablonsky's works are filled with images of animals, mythology and legends, religion, mysticism, and spirituality. This painting is in generally excellent condition and is ready for display; there may be a small loss at extreme lower right corner of her dress but it is barely noticeable. A circa 1960's label from a West Los Angeles framer remains, helping us to date this to about that time or the early 1970's at latest. See the net for other images of Jablonsky's works.
