Very minor shelf ware The Wind in the Willows is a children's novel by Scottish novelist Kenneth Grahame, first published in 1908. Alternatingly slow-moving and fast-paced, it focuses on four anthropomorphized animals: Mole, Rat (a European water vole), Toad, and Badger. They live in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, and camaraderie, and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley. #6 THE DAY MY BUTT WENT PSYCHO PAPERBACK – APRIL 1, 2003 BY ANDY GRIFFITHS A story that you and your butt will never forget!Join Zack on his epic journey across the Great Windy Desert and through the Brown Forest, to reclaim his runaway butt. Reprint. This stirring and emotional look into the life of Anne Frank's beloved childhood friend and Holocaust survivor, Hannah Pick-Goslar (known as "Lies" in Anne Frank's diary) is captivating. Anne and Hannah grew up in the same neighborhood in central Amsterdam and lived very similar lives. Pick-Goslar's narrative, under the tutelage of author Alison Leslie Gold, recalls the comfortable life both girls enjoyed before the Nazis. And Pick-Goslar describes the bright, funny girl she knew who suddenly disappeared from her life. The descriptions spare no detail in their accurate portrayal of the horrors of life in the concentration camps. It is ironic that both girls would be reunited at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, and Hannah was again at Anne's side until the very end of her young life. Hannah Pick-Goslar's involvement in this book gives credible testament to Anne's courage during the most horrific time of the 20th century. A phenomenal read for anyone desiring more information about Anne Frank. Unforgettable nonfiction for ages 9 to 12. #9 The Door in the Lake Paperback – January 1, 2001 by Nancy Butts (Author)Age 10+Grades 6-8Paperback: 159 pagesPublisher: Scholastic; 2nd Printing edition (2001)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0439344182ISBN-13: 978-0439344180UPC: 9780439344180Package Dimensions: 7.6 x 5.5 x 0.6 inchesShipping Weight: 4 ouncesMystery about time Condition: Very minor shelf ware On a camping trip in the mountains, twelve-year-old Joey Finney is discovered missing. More than two years later, he is found in a Mini Mart. The mysterious thing is that he doesn't appear to be a day older, but everyone else has aged. Will Joey be able The last thing 12-year-old Joey remembers is that he got up in the middle of the night and headed to the restrooms just down the path from where his tent was pitched. The next thing he knows he's in the hospital after collapsing in a convenience store, being told by everyone how glad they are to have him back and that he's been gone for over two years. Joey can't tell them where he might have been or why he hasn't grown at all. Then the seizures start and Joey begins to remember what happened to him on that summer night. By chance, he gets an e-mail through one of the electronic bulletin boards for missing children that his mother has been on, and he tracks down a couple of college students who have a theory about what may have happened to him Alone that his returning memories support that he was abducted by aliens. The action and resolution of the story are fairly compressed and taut, and as for the believability who’s to say? We're talking alien abduction here, but the details are convincingly written. A few scenes with Joey's old best friend, who is now too cool to talk to him, and his now bigger, younger brother add the right pangs of adolescent angst. But one must question the author's wisdom in allowing her young character to pedal off on his bike to meet someone he's met on-line, purposefully concealing it from his parents. Although this book is a quick and exciting read, be aware that this one element can all too often lead to tragedy in the real world. She insists she is gravely ill, but if her father brings her the moon she'll be well again. Her father, the king, asks the wisest men in his court how he can give his daughter the moon, and becomes outraged when they all claim that it is too large, too far away, and composed of unstable or dangerous substances. Despairing, the king confides in his court jester. The jester then asks the princess what she thinks the moon is made of, how big it is, and how far away. According to the princess, the moon is as big as her thumbnail and made of gold. She says it's so close that he could climb a tree and pluck it from the sky. He promises to do just that, that very night. Instead, the jester takes the princess's specifications to royal goldsmith, who creates a necklace with a moon-like pendant. It is presented to the princess and she becomes well again. The next day, the King fears she'll see the moon in the sky and realize that the necklace is a forgery. He consults the wisest men in his court, who propose outrageous schemes to prevent her from seeing it in the sky. Ultimately, the jester visits the princess, who is fondly gazing at the newly-risen moon. He asks her how the moon can be in two places, and she tells him the moon always grows back: like a child's tooth, a unicorn's horn, or flowers. #11 Miles of Smiles: Kids Pick the Funniest Poems: Book #3 Paperback – January 1, 1999Product detailsPaperback: 115 pagesPublisher: Scholastic (1999)Language: EnglishUPC 970439083112ISBN-10: 0439082110ISBN-13: 978-0439082112Package Dimensions: 8.8 x 6.9 x 0.3 inchesShipping Weight: 1 pounds CONDITION: MINT – some very minor shelf ware Thousands of elementary-school students helped Bruce Lansky, “The King of Giggle Poetry,” pick the poems by Kenn Nesbitt, Joyce Armor, Joan Horton, Eric Ode, Dave Crawley, Ted Scheu, and other poets included in this book. Oakland, California, is a tough place to grow up: kids pack guns at school; crackheads loiter in doorways; even the wrong-colored clothes can get you "a dirt nap." But for thirteen-year-old Remi, who has just arrived from Haiti, the first night brings something even more terrifying: a monstrous, out-of-control train lurches toward his bedroom window--and only Remi can see it. With the help of his downstairs neighbor, the fast-talking, street-smart Niya, Remi is drawn ever deeper into the mystery of the ghostly night train. Their search leads them back to wartime Oakland, to a shipyard filled with African-American dockworkers and sailors, and, ultimately, to the scene of a murder. Can Remi and Niya find the murderer without becoming trapped in Oakland's past? Or, have they entered a supernatural realm from which there is no escape? "Remi could hear it gaiing on them. The shriek of its whistle rang in his ears. But there just ahead was the switch. Niya was now a few paces in front of him. Then she was passing the switch. Remi started to believe they would make it home! For all its power, its great pounding pistons, its roaring of fire and spewing of steam, the train could not catch them! And then Niya fell."
