CONFEDERATE CENTENNIAL STUDIES # 5 Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly-Bound, Brand New Book Excellent History of the Confederate Engineer Bureau and Service Frontispiece Illustration of Major General Jeremy F. Gilmer, Chief, Confederate Engineer Bureau PUBLISHED BY BROADFOOT PUBLISHING, WILMINGTON, IN 2000 IN TALL COTTON #132 “A scholarly study of the Confederate Engineer Bureau; of engineer supplies and operations in coast and siege operations.” – Civil War Books This book presents a brief, but thorough history of the Confederate Engineer Bureau. The Confederate Engineers obtained the services of trained officers from many that reigned from the U.S. Army. The Confederate engineers lacked the equipment and maps when the war began and equipment was purchased from foreign countries, captured from the enemy and manufactured in the South, but deficiencies continued throughout the war. The Confederacy also organized Engineer troops and hired hundreds of civilians and slaves to work on fortifications, road, and bridges. The Confederacy had some of the most heavily engineered complexes in the world. Vicksburg, Atlanta, Charleston, Petersburg, and many other locations were noted for their extensive engineer efforts. Engineers were called upon to locate possible sites for forts and routes for roads and railroads. The book discussed the establishment of the Confederate Engineer Bureau and state of engineers in 1861, engineer administration throughout the war, the engineer efforts in defense of the rivers and inland waters, the defense of the ports, the Confederate map service and supply, engineers and bridges, the fortification and engineer efforts at various locations and much more. The book contains a bibliography, acknowledgments, and is fully indexed. The book features a frontispiece illustration of one of the leaders of the Confederate Engineer Bureau, Major General Jeremy Gilmore. A former U.S. Engineer, United States Military Academy graduate (ranking 4th in his class), assistant professor of engineering, and Mexican War veteran as the Chief Engineer of the Army of the West, he had extensive engineering experience in constructing forts, fortifications, and harbors. He resigned his commission in June 1861 and entered Confederate service as a major of engineers and soon became chief engineer on the staff of General Albert Sydney Johnson. He was severely wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. After his recover, Gilmer was promoted to chief engineer of the Department of Northern Virginia in August 1862, stationed at Richmond with the rank of brigadier general. In 1863 he was promoted to major general and appointed Chief of the Engineer Bureau for the Confederacy. He oversaw the defense of Charleston, South Carolina. He had a plan developed to build a protective ring around Atlanta with forts and earthworks, which proved difficult to assail. Gilmer helped improve the defenses of Mobile, Alabama, Richmond, Virginia, and many other locations. THIS BOOK IS IN MINT CONDITION This is a limited edition printing; only 750 copies printed.
