Some Background About the Book:Geneva Steel, located in Orem / Vineyard, Utah, has a significant place in the industrial history of the United States. The steel mill was constructed during World War II, beginning in 1942, as part of a strategic effort by the U.S. government to secure a domestic source of steel far from coastal areas vulnerable to enemy attacks. Named after the nearby town of Geneva, Utah, the plant was operated by the United States Steel Corporation and became a major employer in the region, contributing to the economic growth of Utah County. After the war, the plant continued to produce steel, supporting various industries across the Western United States. However, by the late 20th century, Geneva Steel faced increasing challenges due to global competition, environmental regulations, and changing market conditions. The plant was sold to local investors in 1987 but struggled financially, eventually closing in 2001. The site has since undergone redevelopment, but Geneva Steel remains a symbol of Utah’s industrial heritage and its wartime contributions. About the Book:Chris Dunker's photographic study of the Geneva Steel Works offers a unique and intriguing view of the last phase of the life of this massive production facility located in Vineyard, Utah. Constructed during World War Il and producing its first steel for west coast shipyards in 1944, the plant remained in operation until 2001. Geneva Steel declared bankruptcy early in 2002, and by the end of the year the company had begun to liquidate its assets and make plans to demolish its physical facilities. Dunker began photographing Geneva Steel in fate 2004 and followed the plant through its final phase from “cold idle,” in which he photographed the pilot flame of a Q-BOP furnace, through the demolition of the power plant, the last major structure, in mid 2007. Diana Turnbow examines Chris Dunker's photographs in relation to the history of Geneva Steel and the portrayal of industry in photography at the height of the modernist period during which the facility was constructed. Sara Northerner further elaborates on Dunker's roots in landscape and modernism and considers the significance of the photographs within the context of contemporary photography and economic theory. The closure and demolition of Geneva Steel is emblematic of the demise of integrated steel works throughout the United States. While these photographs document a specific site, they prompt thoughtful reflection upon the intricate global network of financing, commerce, and government policy that brought Geneva Steel and other steel production facilities to this end.
