Description: This painting was acquired from on of the Buchanan's. This painting was sent to auction in 2009 and bought by one of the Buchanan's. Has not been on the market since then. The frame has some damage. Here is a condition report from the auction and last time it was sold in 2009. The Hon. Paul H. Lombard Collection of Nineteenth Century Paintings, Vose Galleries, Boston, Massachusetts, 1984, full-page cover ill.One of the leading academic painters of the turn of the century, Blashfield studied in Paris under Leon Bonnat from 1867 to 1870 and from 1874 to 1880 before returning home permanently to New York City. He exhibited paintings at the Paris Salon and the Royal Academy in London, beginning in 1876, while maintaining close friendships with painters Charles Sprague Pearce and Arthur Bridgman who had studios in the same building he did in Paris. During the late 1880s and early 1890s, Blashfield produced allegorical and fanciful paintings before turning primarily to mural work. This painting was done in New York just prior to his return to Paris in 1874.Condition Report*:Relined canvas on a modern stretcher. Faint one-inch horizontal scratch in upper left quadrant, and faint one-inch scratch in lower center next to the frame, acrylic varnish. Under UV examination there is a small passage of strengthening visible just below the woman's bustle on her left side; there is also a one-inch square area of older-looking restoration in the upper right quadrant just right of the vitrine displaying the porcelain.
