The story is also told of the history of the hobby which can trace its origins back to the early days of prototype railroads. The book describes how to build a model railroad, advising the reader on the best use of space and resources. Examples are given of the types of layout and the methods of baseboard, track and scenery construction. The great variety of locomotives and rolling stock is discussed in detail - from ready-to-run models and kits to the highest standards of fine-scale models. As well as being a very practical book, the Encyclopedia features some of today's finest layouts. Many color photographs and track plans are included, with useful tips from the builders. Nearly 100 color artworks and diagrams have been prepared for this superb encyclopedia, which also includes more than 180 excellent color photographs. At a level crossing late at night, a coach halted to await the passing of a train. Out of the dark and drizzling rain loomed the massive bulk of a steam locomotive, working steadily and noisily upgrade with a heavy coal train, and for a few moments the fierce red glow from the firebox gave the passengers in the coach a lurid glimpse of the crew as they toiled on the footplate. As the locomotive passed out of sight around the curve, its steady exhaust beat faded, giving way to the rhythmic thudding of steel wheels on steel rail as the wagons filed by. Silent and unannounced, a single banking engine came drifting swiftly down the gradient and over the crossing, while the solid shadows of the wagons kept rolling slowly by. At last the seemingly endless procession of coal wagons was brought to a close as another banking engine appeared, struggling manfully in the rear amid clouds of steam and smoke. As it too passed away into the night, the crossing bells rang, the barriers lifted and the coach continued on its way. To most of the passengers in the coach, this interlude was simply an unforseen and unwelcome interruption in their journey, but to the author it was pure magic. This is atmosphere - all railways have it, even those which abandoned steam years ago - and it is this which many modellers strive to capture in their models. The lure of the full-size railway is what in the first place draws many people to the model railway hobby. It is at the intangible level of the emotions that the railway makes its strongest appeal, although the technological and historical aspects are undeniably full of interest.
