Second printing after 1911 first in identical format of purple cloth with gilt titles inside blindstamped border. 307pp. Condition: A near very good copy with minor faults. A little rubbing, creasing and toning to spine, edges rubbed in places. 1cm of board exposed at base of front lower corner. One small blemish to front hinge seam. Front board a tad slack but binding firm and sturdy. Endpapers lightly toned. A small number of random fox spots to a small number of pages, chiefly on edge of text block. Interior generally clean. Now protected in plastic covering. The photographs are the most accurate guide to condition. Context: An excellent collection of ghost stories, one of the undisputed highlights in the genre. Several years ago I challenged the brilliantly talented Reggie Oliver to compose a tale in the style of both Crawford's 'The Screaming Skull' (included here) and H.R. Wakefield's 'Blind Man's Buff' - i.e. a breathless and frenetic first-person narrative racing towards an abrupt jarring conclusion - which resulted in the story 'The Complete Symphonies Of Adolf Hitler', one of Reggie's finest tales, and certainly on a par with those of those of Crawford and Wakefield. Indeed, it might be even superior, given its contemporary relevance. However, all three are stylistically linked. The first edition of "Uncanny Tales" now commands a very high price. This identical second printing is a more viable alternative. (If you are happy to sacrifice the gorgeous purple cloth of this title, the variantly-titled US edition 'Wandering Ghosts' features a frontispiece absent from the British ones.)
