The text on the back of the panel says, “The American artists represented here were born in diverse places around this country, as well as elsewhere. Some were self-taught, others were academically trained. They found their subjects both at home and abroad. These images, all details from the originals, reflect some of the enduring themes in American visual arts: a concern with individuality in a democratic society, reverence for the variety of landscape across the continent, down-to-earth realism, and a recurring sense of optimism and energy.” This stamp displays the art of Mary Cassatt. She lived and worked as an expatriate in France and was the only American to be accepted by the French Impressionists. Her works generally displayed women and children. Her painting "Breakfast in Bed" (1897) is on display at the Huntington in San Marino, California. A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 3236o.
