Description: cs2022 - Font Editor Packages for Linux, UNIX, Windows/DOS, and Macintosh This is a collection of Font Editor Programs. Also provided are links to a lot of other resources relevant to typography. Copyright 2004 Edition Arnold Kochman. Other copyrights apply, including but not limited to the GNU Public License. Windows and DOS users will need one of the commonly available unzip type utilities, such as PKUNZIP or WinZip. Programs are distributed with source, when appropriate, and some programs in C, for example, will have to be compiled. The various packages are at different levels of maturity and completeness, and I cannot certify that they are all worthwhile for any particular purpose. You will have to judge for yourself, but there is a lot to choose from. Here is a listing of the packages included: Font Editors bdfedit - An editor for X11 BDF bitmap fonts. It is a tcl/tk program that can be used to create and/or modify several fonts. Glyphs can be dragged from the font to the hold or work areas, or to another character in the font. They can also be dragged from the hold area. For bitmap fonts. Operates in an X11 environment. By Thomas A. Fine. BGIFont - An MS-DOS font editor for BGI (Borland Graphics Interface) fonts. BitFont - A bitmap font generator. Using BitFont you will be able to draw bitmap fonts of various dimensions, 2 to 32 pixels each side. The description, along with general information like font name, author name, etc., can be saved in a formatted C-language, suitable for inclusion in a "C" code. BitFont was written by Daniele Saretta. BitFontEdit - A software program that facilitates creating bit-mapped font for VT220+ and Wyse terminals, and other terminals that fully emulate VT220 terminals. One "draws" the characters as *'s in a text file using any editor or word processor. Then this program scans these drawings and converts them to the soft-font code needed for downloading to terminals or printers. By David Lawyer. Cenon - An open source graphical tool that allows the import of raster (tiff, jpg, gif) and vector (postscript, pdf, dxf, hpgl) data, the vectorisation, editing and creation of data (and page layout), and the export of vector data. It runs on Linux (X-Windows) and Mac OSX. It can be a useful tool as a preprocessing step in the creation of fonts, when starting from scans of drawings or from pictures of typefaces. Source, as well as RPM's, is included, but good luck to anyone wanting to build it. Doubletype - A Java-based open source truetype font editor, created especially but not exclusively for Japanese. DoubleType is designed with collaborative development in mind. Unlike other programs that work on a single binary file, DoubleType stores each glyph in a separate text-based file, making it easir for a tem of designers to use tools such as Wiki and CVS to share their work. FontForge allows you to edit outline and bitmap fonts. You may create new fonts or modify old ones. It is also a format converter and can convert between PostScript (ascii & binary Type1, some Type3, some Type0), TrueType, OpenType (Type2), CID, and SVG. Linux, Windows(Cgwin), Macintosh. Versions also exist for OpenVMS and NetBSD. By George Williams. Manutius 2.0 - A type 1 font editor for Windows, created by Dr. A. Gebert. Documentation is primarily in German. Noah(TM) is a native Type 1 font editor. It can be used to open, change and save PostScript Type 1 (PFB) fonts and their metric (PFM) files. Single and multiple master fonts are supported. Noah(TM) can be used to reanimate a defective font file, if you can open it correctly. Some types of errors can be corrected, but you should know what you're doing. TclFont - A System for creation, display and printing of scalable stroke fonts defined as TCL scripts. It consists of 4 parts: (1) A sample stroke font named 'Pencil' where each glyph is defined by a small TCL procedure. Two types of strokes are currently supported: straight lines and conic curves; (2) A set of C++ files which allow stroke fonts to be scaled and displayed; (3) A set of TCL procedures for creating a downloadable scalable PostScript Type 3 font from a stroke font; and (4) A set of TCL procedures for a large display of single glyphs, useful when creating new glyphs. TclFont is somewhat experimental. pkfed - Raster font editor for Windows, designed to allow writing extensions to support any user format of raster fonts. Supports fixed/variable character height/width, incomplete character sets, etc. It has various character-editing functions. It runs in Windows (Win32) environment and is intended as a tool for developers. Written in Delphi/Kylix. Smurf Sound Font Editor - A GTK sound font editor. Sound font files are used to synthesize instruments from audio samples for use in composing music with wavetable sound cards or software emulation. Smurf currently has AWE 32/64 and SB Live support.
