She initially wrote under pseudonyms, including Foxcroft Davis and Vera Sapoukhyn, until the publication of her short story "Maid Marian" in 1886. Her literary production included 40 books of fiction, collected short fiction, and non-fiction, as well as numerous political columns from Washington for New York dailies and essays (Wikipedia)."Socially conservative, she opposed the growing woman suffrage movement, and her consistent depections of African Americans as servants and slaves -- while acceptable to and endorsed by much of her white readership at that time -- reflected her belief that blacks were inferior and peripheral members of society," according to "Encyclopedia Virginia."In one of her more controversial essays, "The Absence of the Creative Faculty in Women," she argued that "no woman has ever done anything in the intellectual world which has had the germ of immortality," that genius has been denied to the female sex.
