Description: Years ago while on a visit to Paris we found these two, once elegant, antique Tahan Boxes. Both were made by France's most respected ebenestes or cabinet makers, Pierre Lambert Tahan and Pierre Alexander Tahan. One is a Gants Box, intended for storing valuable gloves once fashionable, the other appears to be a jewelry or small documents box. As the photos show, both boxes have many issues and are not perfect, yet for someone who appreciates the work of Tahan, they still capture a bit of their extraordinary skill. Both have intricate Boulle inlays and brass stringing. Much of it still intact but some of it lost from years of apparent mistreatment. Both boxes are made of what appears to be ebony veneers covering some type of hardwood. Inside, both are lined with rosewood veneers. We know they are Tahan because their name is engraved in the lock plate. The jewelry box latch still works with what may have been the original key. The same key fits the Gants Box but the lock mechanism is damaged inside and does not work. The Gants box is 10.5 x 4.2 x 3.5 inches and weighs 1 pound, 2 ounces. The Jewelry Box is 8.5 x 6 x3.75 inches and weighs 1 pound, 4 ounces. The original, Tahan, began in Belgium in 1804. The business moved to Paris in 1825. In 1844, Pierre Lambert turned the business over to his son who located the business at 30 Rue De Le Paix, Paris. You should note the Gants box lock plate is engraved with Tahan, Paris, dating it before 1844. The Jewelry Box lock plate says Rue De La Paix, Paris, so it was made after 1844. We thought they might appeal to a collector familiar with the name, Tahan. Or possibly to someone who has boxes made by the other famous French craftsman such as Giroux, Sormani, or Vervelle. Were these Boxes in even 'very good antique condition' they would value at well over $1000.00 but in their current condition, we would offer them at $325.00 for the pair and ship them within the U.S. at no charge.
