This is an authentic example of the Korean war Europe variant. and covers Europe as a whole & the Middle East Chit is marked on bottom left corner: “Published by the aeronotical chart and information service US Air force Washington, D. C. Feb 1951 ( ACS-WP) Lithographed by S.F. April 1951” right corner: “5 digit 1 Letter (serial number) Restricted XM 51-1 (European)” 3 different variants/patterns were produced in 1951 the 1) Far East for China, Japan, Korea & the asian countries 2) Russian for the Eastern European & communist bloc countries and 3) Europe in the non conflict zone these covered countries like France, Denmark, Germany etc/ They also cover the Middle East with Persian & arabic...they were used until around 1960 when a new version replaced these. Many of these Chits were destroyed especially those in use for the Far East, Europe is next rarest followed by the Russian & East Bloc examples being very common possibly because very few pilots flew this region. Many examples if used were returned and destroyed based on the restricted marking. Thus not many survive today! The European ones are interesting and unique being the mid range example not as rare as the Far East but much more scarce then the Russia examples. Blood chits were carried by pilots basically as a form of communication with the local populous in the event of being shot down over a hostile or dangerous country. Upon crashing and finding civilians the blood chit would be presented to the civilian. It reads more or less to take the pilot to safe keeping and help them get in touch with American authorities or American allies to rescue the pilot. Those that read the chit and assisted are promised compensation for their efforts. They have saved 100s of downed pilots from WW2 up to the present day. They have even been used in Desert storm & the global war on terror, bosnia OIF OEF And OIR and many other American military operations!
