Description: History of the First Locomotives in America by William H. Brown AMAZING! This book, History of the First Locomotives in America, by William H. Brown was published by the D. Appleton and Company in 1874. This is the Revised Edition, as the original was published in 1871. This book is 150 years old! And it's in marvelous shape for its age. No dust jacket, as issued. The green leather boards do show their age and there is soiling and scuffing/marking to the front and rear boards. There is some edge and corner wear and the corners are bumped. The pebbled-grain leather is beginning to separate at the head and tail of the spine. See pictures. The ends of the pages are quite dark, but I'm uncertain if there was any sort of stain applied when they were first made. It could just be darkening from age. At the top you can see that some pages are uneven, like there is extra material sticking out of the top. These are three extra long fold-out plates (very nice) that a previous owner was a bit careless in folding back in place. The hinges on the inside are holding up wonderfully and there is no separation visible either at the front or the rear. The off-white paste downs and end papers have some toning and soiling present and in the front there are light pencil markings on the paste down and the end paper. Please see pictures. The pages on the inside do have mild soiling throughout and there is some minor marginalia here and there, but from what I can tell it is all done in light pencil. The fold out illustrations have held up well despite their haphazard folding, but one is torn a bit. Please see all pictures. This is a gorgeous old historical text, full of detailed locomotive information and complete with some nice detailed engravings and nifty fold-out illustrations.
