Description: Juneau, Alaska, was only twelve years old when Lloyd Winter and Percy. Pond opened their photographic studio in 1893. Through the following fifty years, these remarkable frontier photographers witnessed and recorded great changes as Juneau evolved from a mining boomtown into the political capital of a United States territory. In their heyday around the turn of the century, they boasted the largest and choicest collection of Alaskan views. Among their images are those of Tlingit and Haida Indians, which constitutes one of the most important collections of photographs of Alaskan Natives. The photographs in Images from the Inside Passage include prints from over a hundred glass plate negatives taken between 1893 and 1910, now in the Alaskan State Library. They feature Tlingit and Haida Indians, their villages and art. By 1893, Indians in southeast Alaska had faced pervasive changes brought by white settlers - new religions, a new education system, a new legal code, and new economic activities. The Winter and Pond images reflect the impact of these changes on the lives of Alaskan Indians. Together, they suggest that Indians adopted foreign innovations without rejecting pride in their own heritage. Introductory essays place the photographs in historical context, provide biographical and technical information about Winter and Pond and their photography, and discuss the interpretation of tradition and change. Dr. Margaret B. Blackman, an authority on ethnohistorical photography, contributed the Foreword.
