At 9 years old, Nazis sent him and his family to the Mathausen Concentration Camp (the worst, Category III, most feared concentration camps in history) where they remained for a year until the Allied liberation army freed them.Family moved to Israel in 1949 and lived in Kibbutz (Jewish communal settlement). In order to hold on to his art scholarship he had to enroll in Israeli army. Tarkay overcame hardships, went on to become one of the most loved and popular artists in the world. The inspiration of his work lays in French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism.
