Description: Marcel Duchamp, Nude Descending a Staircase. The New York Armory Show. This is an original postcard from 1913 not a reprint. This postcard is in very nice condition - see scans. The Armory Show in 1913 was one of the most important art shows ever put on. This show introduced modern art to America. The show was called the “International Exhibition of Modern Art: Association of American Painters and Sculptors, Inc.,” it ran from February 17th to March 15th in 1913. The exhibit comprised almost 1400 works of which about two thirds were by Americans. Particular excitement was evoked by the Cubist and Fauvist works in the European Galleries. The show travelled to Chicago [March 28th to April 16th] with about half of the artwork and none of the sculpture and then to Boston [April 28th to May 19th]. Because of space considerations in Boston, the rest of the American works were removed. Postcards were produced for all three exhibitions: New York, Chicago, and Boston. Postcards were produced as souvenirs for the show. These 58 different cards, from over a hundred years ago, are now hard to find.
