Description: "I play a Selmer alto and a Gregory 4A-18M mouthpiece, both circa 1951, and Rico 3 1\2 reeds."-- Paul Desmond, January, 1976 This quote is from the liner notes of the 25th anniversary reunion Dave Brubeck Quartet record. This MC Gregory Master Hollywood 5A-16 is from the same maker and same era as Paul Desmond’s primary mouthpiece. As such, it has many of the same characteristics as the piece that Paul Desmond played. These mouthpieces were handmade with vulcanized hard rubber cooked in-house. Though there is some light wear on the body of the mouthpiece, the facing and beak are entirely intact, and it is unmodified. It is rare to find these pieces in this condition nowadays. The mouthpiece has a clean, crisp sound and plays evenly throughout the range of the horn. Here is a video of me playtesting this mouthpiece: https://youtu.be/Y135KHClKGI?si=ZwzpGN3QMVx_jwt6 This particular model may be more desirable for modern players because the tip is larger than the model Paul played on, and the chamber is slightly smaller. These changes give the mouthpiece a bit more projection and brightness. Nonetheless, it absolutely has the classic Gregory sound. Feel free to reach out with any questions!
