Contemporary marbled paper over boards backed in gilt-lettered black morocco. Howes/ U.S.iana C923, noting variance in plate collation among issues. Condition: Binding rubbed & scuffed, small split at the upper front joint, backstop creased, archival tissue repair at part I leaf 139/140, sporadic foxing & toning (occasionally heavy), a Good or better copy of an uncommon book. Please see photos. Not to be confused with the edition in one part with of 447 pages, this edition adds some 488 pages and reprints the contribution of Major Osborne Cross (pages 126 - 244, part II). Cross was the quartermaster for the first United States military expedition to travel the full length of the Oregon Trail from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Vancouver, May to October, 1849. An historically important account; the plates are among the earlist of the Oregon Trail. There are additionally many other valuable reports in the volume pertaining to the end of the Mexican; the annexation of the New Mexico and Utah territories, Texas, and California; Indian relations, etc., with references to the Compromise of 1850 and the status of slavery in the new territories.
