The pattern is uncut and complete with instructions. Missouri River patterns are printed on paper for more durability and ease of use. Typical of the simple, but practical, early American clothing styles, this was the common, everyday shirt worn by laborers, settlers, traders, gentlemen and explorers. Shirts of this period were a pull over style and much longer than those of today, normally reaching to below mid-thigh. With this extra long length, they could be tucked into the breeches, thus doubling as an undergarment. The sleeves were much fuller and gathered at the cuff, and the overall loose fit of the shirt allowed complete freedom of movement. Missouri River's pattern has all of these features, plus a conventional, square cut collar; however, period paintings show that the standup style collar was popular as well. Popular from the middle of the 18th century through the mid-19th century, this authentic pattern is based on surviving museum examples, period paintings by noted artists Charles Willson Peale, Alfred Jacob Miller and George Caleb Bingham, as well as several period and secondary source documents.
