Description: These are NOT generic photos - you're looking at the actual rock you will receive when ordering! And all orders are mailed out within one business day, shipping included! It's a combination of "pyroclastic breccia" and "scoria" or "cinder" and was hand-picked directly from the Springerville Volcanic Field, near the White Mountains of east-central Arizona. As you can see, this extra-large, red / reddish-brown lava rock is 11½" across its base and stands roughly 9" tall - in the right setting, it would make a most impressive lava mountain! Its craggy surface is covered with cracks, crevices, and holes; and in Photo #6, you can see a separate rock captured into the whole (see below). You'll also find pockmarks in a variety of shapes and sizes. Volcanoes were active here between 300 thousand -1.5 million years ago. When one erupted, it spewed a combination of rock, ash, and water vapor. Hot ash surrounded individual pieces of rock, hardening together as it cooled. This rock is the result. You can see still features of those individual pieces jutting out along the surface, including elements of another type of volcanic rock - scoria, recognizable by its pores and pockmarks. The red color came about when its iron content oxidized during eruption. This rock would be perfect for: • In aquariums. Set it out a bit from a corner to create a safe space for smaller fish, or combine it with other rocks to create an underground scene. Scoria lava rocks are extremely lightweight and reduce the risk of damaging your tanks. They offer additional benefits ensuring the health of your aquarium, too. IMPORTANT: This rock is shipped in a natural state and needs to be prepared before introducing it into your aquarium. • Lava rocks can create a beautiful setting in your terrarium or bonsai tree arrangements. Juxtapose this rock to larger plants to create a visual offset, for example. (Please see our other listings if you’re looking for something in a different size or shape. Each listing is unique.) • Lava rocks are an ideal base for planting small succulents. Its pores offer natural benefits that help certain varieties of succulents to even thrive compared to other planting methods. They allow air to pass to their shallow roots, while retaining moisture as water easily drains. Their native roughness offers a place for plants to grab hold and take root, too. Spokesmodel Woody says that we don't take you for granite at Arizona Lava Rocks! Our listings don't start out in a pile in some yard! Each rock is individually gathered. This one was picked off the ground because something about it caught our eye. Again, this listing is for the specific rock you see in the accompanying photos.
