Description: PHILIP-LORCA diCORCIA (b. 1953, American) 'DeBruce, New York, 1999' (from A Storybook Life series), 1999/2003 SIGNED Limited Edition Photograph Archival ink jet print, 1999/2003, 11" x 14" (image and sheet), edition of 250. SIGNED (ll) by artist and numbered '210/250' (lc) on verso. Excellent condition with no visible defects, never framed or displayed. Reference: 'Philip diCorcia: A Storybook Life', 2003, Arena Editions, plate 66; 'So the Story Goes: Photographs by Tina Barney, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Nan Goldin, Sally Mann, and Larry Sultan', 2006, Art Institute of Chicago. DiCorcia's son Bruno is in this 1999 photograph, named DeBruce after the location in New York. It is also from A Storybook Life, a 74-picture series that is meant to tell a "lopsided narrative" in which the first and last images are of his father but which otherwise jumps in time and place. "The point was to have a sequence which has a similar effect as a dream or a half conscious state," he adds. This image was selected by the artist from the narrative sequence of images that make up his book, 'A Storybook Life' (Twin Palms Press, 2003) and combines diCorcia's seemingly casual compositions with an iconic presence. A Storybook Life is a carefully sequenced group of 76 predominately unseen photographs taken over the past 25 years in as far-flung locations as Singapore, Cairo, Salonika and the artist's childhood home. While the images are seemingly unrelated in content and form, their accumulative effect suggests an allusive narrative that is inherently fictional but also tangentially autobiographical. The same protagonists re-appear at different stages of their lives. They rarely look at us or at each other - instead, they are absorbed in their own worlds of reflection. Domestic interiors and urban and rural landscapes provide a resonant backdrop, cinematically charged with a sense of threat or longing. A white picket-fenced house is perched incongruously in a barren landscape. A lush garden appears in a jungle of concrete and steel. A jumble of unopened Christmas presents languish beneath a heavily decorated tree. Moving between urban and rural, private and public, moments of connection and of intense isolation, A Storybook Life offers an epic view of everyday existence. One of America's leading photographers, Philip-Lorca diCorcia combines a documentary tradition with the fictional worlds of cinema and advertising to create a powerful link between reality, fantasy and desire. Alternating between the informality of the snapshot and the iconic quality of a staged composition, his play between real and artificial lighting, his eye for symbolic detail and his saturated colors give diCorcia's photographs a psychological and emotional intensity. Born in Hartford, CT, Philip-Lorca diCorcia has been exhibiting his work for over 25 years and has had solo shows throughout the U.S. Europe and Japan. He teaches at Yale University and lives in New York. Phillip Lorca DiCorcia is represented by the David Zwirner Gallery, New York, NY.
