Description: The story (or stories) about PLOMB/Pennington/Penes/PROTO is lengthy and convoluted. For anyone wanting in-depth information visit “The History of PLOMB Tools” (http://www.vannattabros.com/plomb/plombtool.html). For our purpose it’s sufficient to say that World War II provided unexpected benefits for Plomb with the largest being the Wright Field contract. Plomb acquired Penens in 1942 as part of an expansion of its wartime contracting business. The tools that were produced there for use during the War were sent to Wright Field in Ohio where tools were processed for use by US Army Air Forces. These tools were stamped with a numbers designated by the government contract and did not necessarily reflect the number Plomb used for identical and commercially available tool. The military contract number included a “WF” prefix. This Socket, WF-25, is one of the sockets from WF-25 through WF-33 that were 3/8 Inch Square Drive in sizes 1/4 Inch to 3/4 inch by 1/16 Inch increments. It shows evidence of use, but not of abuse or misuse. There is chipping of the Plating which remains mostly intact. The Plating is probably cadmium and it might look prettier if polished BUT polishing cadmium is not recommended for the unaware. Aggressive cleaning with wire brushes is potentially a deadly combination as cadmium dust is highly carcinogenic. A passive approach is recommended . . . or leave it as it is! “When was the Socket produced?” was a puzzle, though the “WF” prefix does narrow the time to World War II. In “Section Six - Year of Manufacture” on “History of Plomb Tools” (https://www.vannattabros.com/plomb/plombtool.html), mentioned above, the dating convention, if present, is said to be a single number (9,0,1,2) representing 1939 through 1942. This statement also says that “USA” had replaced “Los Angeles”. Obviously, this WF-25 does not include “USA”, but does carry a stamped “C” (see images). We know that during the War, two letters were commonly applied to such tools, but we have no information allowing us to define time of production for a single letter stamping, thus, we offer “World War II era”. We will ship the WF-25 by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
