Description: 800x600 Up for auction is this Vintage Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank, issued by “The Pennsylvania National Bank of Pottsville, Pennsylvania”. The bank was Chartered in 1866, by the Comptroller in Washington, DC. Because the bank kept the key to promote home savings, it is very rare to see one of these Advertising Still Banks with its key. It took me over two years to make this key! This Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank was manufactured by The Parisian Novelty Company of 3510 South Western Avenue, Chicago, Illinois. This bank weighs just under 4.6 ounces and is built from chrome plated brass and steel. The celluloid endcaps are most certainly the highlight of this advertising desk bank, having excellent color and only minor scuffing & wear. The front stationary endcap depicts the front of the Bank Building with a period automobile parked in front and people walking. The full name of the Bank (THE PENNSYLVANIA NATIONAL BANK, POTTSVILLE, PA.) appears in bold lettering around the edge reversed out of brown ink. The removable rear endcap is an enticement to save regularly. The phrase: “Systematic Saving Is The Key To Success” appears in bold lettering around the removable edge reversed out of brown ink. This bank has a design to prevent the coins from being removed once deposited through the coin slot. The U.S. Patent on the bottom of the removable endcap dates to February 17, 1925. This Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank has all its original color and sharpness remaining! The Celluloid has most of its original gloss & sheen with only very minor scuffing. There are absolutely NO CRACKS in the Celluloid! If this Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank were a coin, I would certainly grade it Uncirculated, as there is ever so minor scuffing on the high points of both endcaps. This unit measures 2-5/8 inches in length (left to right) x 2-3/8 inches wide (front to back) x 2-3/4 inches tall. The key and lock work very well. Just insert the handmade key, press the key down until it touches the body of the bank, and turn the removable endcap 1/8th of a turn in either direction. The locking tabs click to lock the endcap back in place when you are finished. Just like a rare coin, I choose not to try to clean this piece up, for fear of ruining its originality. The new owner can do so if they wish. I will include a copy of the four page U.S. Patent document to go with this Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank and Key. This Parisian Novelty Company Celluloid Advertising Desk Bank would make a fine addition to any Pennsylvania National Banknote collection! This bank was located in Schuylkill County, so it should appeal to people collecting National Banknotes and other Banking Collectibles from that and the surrounding counties.
