Description: Up for sale is a vintage 49 Star United States Flag that was flown over the Capitol of the United States in 1960. On January 3, 1959, Alaska was formally granted statehood placing the 49th star on our Flag. An Executive Order of President Eisenhower provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically. The 49-Star flag was official for only one year, until July 4, 1960, when Hawaii achieved its Statehood and the 50-Star flag was born. President Eisenhower was the only President to serve under this flag. This particular flag is accompanied by a letter (including a carbon copy) signed by J. George Stewart, Architect of the Capitol, dated March 21, 1960, delivering the flag to New York Senator Jacob Javits of Virginia. The letter explains that the flag was to be presented to Dr. Mortimer Solomon of Roosevelt, New York. The flag includes its original box and and the original envelope that included the letter from the Architect of the Capitol. One side of the flag is badly faded and 2 crinkles are starting to separate. The original box is in poor condition. The flag measures approximately 89" x 50".Please ask any questions before purchasing as all sales will be final and I cannot accept any returns.
