Description: This is a finely rendered and RARE Antique Modern WPA American Portrait Bust Sculpture, comprised of clay or ceramic, created by the talented Santa Monica, California WPA public sculptor, Fritz Henkels (1890 - 1963.) Henkels was famously known during the 1930's for his large-scale cement sculptures of luminaries such as Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln and Paul Von Hindenburg, among others. This artwork likely depicts the artist's son, and is titled, signed and dated by the artist on the verso: "Fritz Henkels Jr. By F. Henkels '38." This bust depicts the portrait of a handsome young man with his hair worn in a short and parted 1930's era hairstyle. He stares directly at the viewer, with piercing eyes, a prominent nose and strong jawline. This artwork is very realistic, and near lifelike in its appearance. Approximately 11 inches tall x 7 1/2 inches wide x 6 1/2 inches deep. Good overall condition for age, with some mild scuffs, scratches and speckles of discoloration throughout (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California. To my knowledge, this is the only original artwork by Fritz Henkels to ever be publicly offered for sale. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks! About the Artist: Fritz Henkels (1890 - 1963) "Life like statues of famous men in the medium of cement grace many parks and roadways in Southern California. They are the work of Fritz Henkels, a German workman Santa Monica, California. Henkels says that he never had an art lesson, but he has completed huge statues of Lincoln, Will Rogers, Von Hindenburg, and Theodore Roosevelt. A brick-layer's trowel, and an ordinary table knife are the only tools used by Henkels in his work. He is a WPA workman." LINCOLN CURIOSITIES IN ART FORT WAYNE, INDIANA (July 14, 1952) This compilation of references to Lincoln curiosities in art was suggested by the wide publicity recently given to the story of a precious stone, valued at $250,000, cut in the image of Abraham Lincoln. Although it may excel! in money value other artistic efforts to produce unique portraits of the President, some of the works have called for just as much artistic skill and labor in their respective fields of creative art. Cement An amateur in the sculpturing field, Fritz Henkels of Santo Monica, Calif., has made among other studies an heroic figure of the enduring Lincoln out of cement. Of course, a little sand was mixed in to make the cement behave properly.
