Description: Report from Trustees of the Australian Museum for 1876 - Edward Ramsay, AW Scott POB#45295 TITLE: REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM, FOR THE YEARS ENDING 31ST DECEMBER, 1876. AUTHOR: Alexander Walker Scott [Chairman of Board of Trustees, and Entomologist], Edward W. Palmer [Secretary], Edward P. Ramsay PUBLISHER: [N.p. Sydney?]: Legislative Assembly. New South Wales DATE: 1877DESCRIPTION: 13p. A legislative offprint of 13 pages comprising an official report of the Australian Museum to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. CONDITION NOTES: Near FINE. Fresh overall appearance with light toning. Lignin era paper in fine condition - but light chipping to bottom edge. No creases or writing.BINDING: Pamphlet..Founded by the Colonial Administration in 1827, the Australian Museum had grown considerably by the 1870s. This 1877 report is the first by "new management".A new building on College Street opened in 1867, and the enlarged exhibition space was filling rapidly. In 1873 the theft of a gold specimen from the museum resulted in a parliamentry inquest in 1874 and the sacking of long serving curator Gerard Krefft. The present report to the Assembly reflects the activities of the "new management" including sections signed by Krefft's replacement Edward P. Ramsay, the first Australian born Curator, and creator of the still incomplete 6000 item catalog of the collection. Chairman of the Board of Trustees and noted Entomologist A. W. Scott signed the main report, and Edward W. Palmer signed the balance sheets and visitor attendance statistics. The interesting components of the brief report, signed by Edward Ramsay, are the extensive lists of donations together with their donors - a fascinating list of scientists, settlers, and sea captains. Exchanges of specimens with museums around the world demonstrates how flourishing and cosmopolitan the museum had become, and how important a source it had become for international museums completing collections of Australian artifacts. .Probably RARE. Definitely SCARCE. Looks like a stand-alone publication (i.e. not removed from a larger book), the document is in beautiful fresh condition, stitched in original cotton string. OCLC locates other trustee reports, but not this one. Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
