Richard Tucker Great Tenor Arias Fausto Cleva Emil Cooper Vinyl LP Record VG+ Record Grade per Goldmine Standard: VG+ RICHARD TUCKER, Tenor, with Fausto Cleva and Emil Cooper conducting theMetropolitan Opera Orchestra and Wilfred Pelletier conducting theColumbia Opera OrchestraHere, assembled on one remarkably richrecord, are no less than ten of the greatestoperatic arias for tenor ever written, allinterpreted by a singer—Richard Tucker—whose glorious voice which inevitably re-minds the listener of Caruso’s, whose feel-ing for the melodic line, and whose finemusicality have placed him among the top-ranking vocalists of the day.Ever since the January evening in 1945when Richard Tucker made his Metropoli-tan Opera debut, as Enzo in La Gioconda, critics all over the country have been show-ering him with such tributes as, “He hasthe ardent tenor, the outpouring ease oftone, the soaring notes and the ‘Ping’ in thevoice that means operatic accent.”In 1949 he was chosen by Arturo Tosca-nini to sing the role of Rhadames in Aida ina nation-wide broadcast performance ofVerdi’s opera under the direction of thegreat Italian-born conductor.Richard Tucker was born in Brooklynand received all his musical training in NewYork City. He made his concert debut atTown Hall in 1939, singing the tenor role inRossini’s Stabat Mater. Following thisevent there came a series of concert andopera engagements which helped to buildup an enviable reputation for the youngartist and which culminated in the Metro-politan Opera engagement. The range of Mr. Tucker’s repertoire isadmirably illustrated by the collection ofarias contained on this record. Here thetenor portrays the lighthearted Duke ofRigoletto, the remorseful Don Alvaro ofLa Forza del Destino, the sturdy farmerLionel of Martha, the jealousy-torturedstrolling player of Pagliacci, the weak-willed soldier of Cavalleria Rusticana, theconquering warrior of Aida, and others.Naturally any such collection must in-clude a goodly share of arias from Verdi’soperas, and Richard Tucker sings five ofthem. In Celeste Aida from Aida, the war-rior Rhadames who has been chosen to leadthe Egyptian army against the Ethiopiansgives voice to his love for Aida, the slave ofthe Princess of Egypt. A notable feature ofMr. Tucker’s performance of this aria is thefact that he concludes with the low B-flatoriginally intended by Verdi but so seldomvoiced in performances of the music. Thetenor also sings three songs given to theamorous Duke in Rigoletto—the alwayspopular La donna e mobile and Questa oquella in which he expresses his carefreephilosophy, and the more serious Parmiveder le lagrime (preceded by the stunningrecitative Ella mi fu rapita) in which theDuke laments the supposed loss of the onlywoman he has truly loved. In the aria fromLa Forza del Destino—O tu che in seno(preceded by the recitative La vita e in-ferno all’ infelice) the hero, Don Alvaro, who has accidentally killed his beloved’sfather and who believes that the daughteris dead, utters a powerful outcry againstthe fate that has deprived him of happiness. In the familiar and dramatic Vesti lagiubba from Pagliacci the strolling playerCanio, knowing that his wife is unfaithfulto him, expresses the conviction that theplay must go on even though one’s heart isbreaking. In M’appari from Flotow’s opera Marthathe hero dreams of the charming girl heloves. In the tender Rachel! quand du Seigneurfrom Halevy’s La Juive, the hero of theopera, Eleazar the Jew, reflects on his lovefor his daughter. The setting of Bizet’s opera, The PearlFishers, is Ceylon, and the hero is Nadirwho follows the profession named in thetitle. In the aria, Je crois entendre encore,he tells a friend his recollection of a myste-rious lady whose beauty and voice still livein his heart.Mamma, quel vino e generoso from Mas-cagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana is the emo-tional aria in which the soldier Turiddubids farewell to his mother before the duelwith a jealous husband which is to provefatal to the young soldier.GREAT TENOR ARIASLeoncavallo: Pagliacci — “Vesti la giubba” (“On with the motley”) • Mascagni: CavalleriaRusticana —“Mamma, quel vino e generoso” (Turiddu’s Farewell) • Verdi: Rigoletto — “Parmiveder le lagrime” (“Art thou weeping?”) • Verdi: La Forza del Destino —“Oh, tu che in seno”(“Thou heavenly one”) • Verdi: Rigoletto — “La donna e mobile” (“Woman is fickle”) • Verdi:Aida —“Celeste Aida” (“Heavenly Aida”) • Verdi: Rigoletto —“Questa o quella” (“When acharmer would win me”) • Flotow: Martha — “M’appari tutt’ amor” (Lionel’s Air) • Halevy:La Juive —“Rachel! quand du Seigneur” (“Rachel! when from the Lord”) • Bizet: The PearlFishers —“Jc crois entendre encore” (Recitative and Romanza) lp1087
