Description: Mark Antony | AR Denarius Reference: RRC 544/8-39 Date: 32-31 BCE Obverse: ANT·AVG III·VIR·R·P·C; Praetorian galley, right, with sceptre tied with fillet on prow. Border of dots. Reverse: LEG ? ; Aquila between two standards. Border of dots Mint: Patrae Size: 19.7 mm Weight: 2.73 grams EX HARLAN J. BERK. A worn example of Mark Antony's iconic legionary series of denarii (23 for legions, 1 for the Praetorian cohort, and 1 for the cohors speculatorum ). Reverse has been smoothed by heavy circulation and the legionary number is no longer visible. Priced accordingly. These coins were struck at Antony's winter encampment, Patrae (northwest Peloponnesian coast near the opening to the Gulf of Corinth) in the build up to the decisive Battle of Actium in 31 BCE. Each issue commemorates one of Antony's legions and were used to pay his army prior to his final showdown with Octavian. These denarii continued to widely circulate around the Mediterranean for centuries; and 260 examples were found in the third century CE Shapwick Hoard in Britain.
