Description: Collection of ten individual portraits of members of the 1907 Carlisle Indians football team in uniform, taken by assistant coach William Newman with his identifying notes to the reverse, as well as later identifying pencil notes to five of the photographs. Apparently removed from a scrapbook, with faint signs of glue to reverse sides and slight wrinkling to some of the images. Images themselves clear and sharp. Varying sizes, between 6" - 7" inches tall, 2.5" - 4" wide. The photograph of Frank Mount Pleasant has been inscribed by him on the right edge, though it has partially faded. The reverse of Albert Payne's photograph with notation to reprint at reduced size; the photos were likely taken for yearbook or promotional program purposes, but appear to be unique, as I've been unable to locate copies in the Carlisle Digital Resource Center or elsewhere. While his photograph is not present, 1907 marks the first season which Jim Thorpe was to play for Carlisle football team. Listed beginning from top row, left-to-right: 1) Sam McLean, Afraid-of-a-Bear (Sioux) 2) Albert Payne (Umatilla) 3) Emil Wauseka Hauser (Cheyenne) 4) David Little Oldman (Cheyenne) 5) Frank Mount Pleasant (Tuscarora), signed to front 6) William Jennings Gardner (Ojibwe) 7) Scott J. Porter, Little Boy (Chippewa) 8) Nikifer Shoushick (Aleut) 9) Fritz Hendricks (Caddo) 10) Isaac Lyon (Onondaga) Altogether a remarkable collection of scarce original photographs of the famed football team near the peak of its success, from the private collection of their assistant coach.
